Old Batumi
The quarter where the city was an imperial port trading Rothschild oil: art nouveau, carved balconies and courtyards hung with grapevines.
Old Batumi lies between the port and Europe Square: Memed Abashidze and Zviad Gamsakhurdia streets, early-20th-century facades, coffee shops in the archways. Baku oil was taxed here, Greek and Turkish shops hummed — the eclectic facades still tell the story.
Wander without a route: turn into open courtyards, look up at the balconies. Landmarks to steer by — Europe Square with its astronomical clock, and the Armenian church on Gamsakhurdia.
